Defense Health Agency Selects Hypori to Secure Clinical Dictation on Clinicians’ Personal Phones

Hypori, the leading secure mobile access and virtual mobile infrastructure (VMI) platform, today announced that the Defense Health Agency (DHA) deployed Hypori’s VMI platform to give clinicians secure, hands-free access to Oracle Health’s ambient clinical dictation technology (Clinical Agent AI) from their own personal phones. The integration ensures personal health information (PHI), controlled unclassified information (CUI), and Department of War (DoW) data are never exposed to the physical device.

“We’re empowering physicians to focus on their patients instead of a screen – reducing data-entry errors and omissions while creating a better patient experience and supporting better-informed care,” said Jim Cushman, President and Chief Product Officer, Hypori. “At the same time, our capabilities significantly reduce the cost of issuing devices to every clinician, giving organizations the flexibility to scale with staffing in a way a fixed device fleet can’t match.”

Physicians spend hours buried in their tablet or computer, updating electronic health records (EHR) instead of engaging face-to-face with their patients – an expensive, unproductive dynamic that limits how many people a clinician can see in a day. Oracle’s Clinical Agent AI resolves the documentation burden, but only if it could run on the phones clinicians already carry. Personal phones cannot legally and securely store PHI or CUI, and issuing 100,000-plus government-owned devices to the DHA workforce was cost-prohibitive and operationally rigid – a fleet that does not flex with staff turnover the way Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) does.

To solve this, DHA deployed Hypori’s VMI to bring secure, Clinical Agent AI to clinicians’ personal phones, letting Oracle Health’s Cerner-based tool listen to a patient visit, transcribe it, and update the EHR automatically, without PHI, CUI, or application data ever touching the personal, physical device. DHA can now equip clinicians instantly, with no new hardware to buy or manage, while meeting DoDI 8500.01, DFARS 252.204-7012, and HIPAA requirements.

As a result, DHA gains a production-ready, audit-ready deployment, removing the hurdles of second devices, expanded authorization boundary, and employee-privacy friction that come with mobile device and application management. Clinicians get uninterrupted, natural conversations instead of screen time, translating into fewer documentation errors, better diagnostic and treatment planning, faster, more accurate billing-code capture, and the capacity to see more patients each day.

Key features and benefits include:

  • Compliance without new hardware: Keeps PHI, CUI, and captured audio off personal devices, in compliance with DoDI 8500.01, DFARS 252.204-7012, and HIPAA/NIST CUI rules without issuing agency-owned phones.

  • Single-device convenience and rapid onboarding: Eliminates the need for clinicians to carry a second phone and provisions secure, virtual workspaces in minutes rather than the weeks typical of government furnished equipment (GFE) procurement.

  • Clinician time back for patient care, less IT overhead: Secure, hands-free dictation enables clinicians to focus on the patient instead of the EHR, while eliminating the need for IT to provision, patch, or physically manage personal devices.

“Protecting healthcare data shouldn’t come at the expense of how people need to work,” said Jared Shepard, CEO, Hypori. “By protecting data through secure access instead of managing devices, we can help healthcare organizations isolate enterprise platforms, modernize clinical workflows, preserve privacy, and simplify secure access to the tools their teams need. Ultimately, it’s about safeguarding critical healthcare data while giving teams more time to focus on delivering better patient care.”

The integration is live today. The pilot phase included 2,000 users deployed with a Boundary Cloud Access Point (BCAP) connection and a dedicated cluster in place. DHA has budgeted internally to grow to 14,000 users, with enterprise-scale discussions putting the ceiling between 70,000 and 100,000 users.
