A Bookstore Built Twice: Lioness Books Opens April 25 After March Fire

Lioness Books to Open April 25 in Leander, TX After Fire Destroyed Pre-Opening Inventory

Austin, United States – April 20, 2026 / Lioness Books /

LEANDER, Texas, April 25, 2026. Lioness Books, the community-centered independent bookseller in Leander, TX, known for bringing stories directly to readers, will open its new brick-and-mortar location in Old Town Leander on Saturday, April 25, 2026. The grand opening caps a remarkable comeback after a March fire destroyed the store’s pre-opening inventory just weeks before its original launch date.

Founded by former educator and activist Sarah Ambrus, Lioness Books is built on the belief that access to books and the freedom to read strengthen communities. The new storefront will deepen that mission by creating a welcoming space where neighbors can browse curated used books, discover local art, and gather for events that spark curiosity and connection.

“Our new location is a space for all and built by many. We want Lioness Books to be a place where people feel welcome, accepted, curious, and empowered. This store is our way of investing in the heart of our community and inviting everyone in,” said Sarah Ambrus, founder of Lioness Books.

A Community Bookstore Rebuilt by the Community

On the night of March 26, 2026, a fire broke out in the on-site storage building next to the Old Town Leander location, destroying every book, interior furnishing, and piece of inventory prepared for the original opening. The Leander Fire Department contained the fire quickly and prevented it from spreading to neighboring properties or the main storefront, which remained structurally sound. No one was injured.

What followed was an immediate and unmistakable show of support from across Leander and the greater Austin area. Neighbors, customers, and people who had never set foot in the store arrived to help with the cleanup. A GoFundMe campaign drew contributions from across the country. Local businesses organized fundraisers and book drives, and the Leander Chamber of Commerce served as a community donation collection site.

Fundraising partners included Penny Royal Bakery, 5th Element Brewing, Turquoise Peacock Boutique, and Sharksburger, each of which hosted events to benefit the rebuild. Many other neighborhood groups collected books and supplies to replenish what was lost.

“What happened after the fire reminded us exactly why we started Lioness Books in the first place,” said Ambrus. “This community did not wait to be asked. They just showed up. We are opening on April 25 because of them, and for them.”

The story was covered by regional and national outlets, including Fox 7 Austin, CBS Austin, MSN, and the Austin American-Statesman, each of which helped amplify the call for support and bring more people into the effort to help Lioness Books rebuild.
